Hidden Falls Cabins & RV Park down in Nebraska City is another great choice in the area, close to parks and many local businesses. We promise you’ll love the view and outdoor space, whether you’re RVing or staying at one of their cabins or hotel rooms. The Walnut Creek Lake and Recreation Area is a 450-acre mixed-use recreation area with a 105-acre reservoir. There is an RV park inside this recreation area, featuring 44 electric sites for just $16 per night! Please note: this park is very unique, as it is a “pack in, pack out” facility. Riverwest Park has long been one of our favorite spots in the Omaha area for summer and fall recreation, but did you know that they offer RV and tent camping reservations as well? Located right on the river with plenty of riverfront activities along with seasonal events, Riverwest is a great place to park! Fisher’s Cove is a privately owned, seasonal campground conveniently located in Silver Creek, just southwest of Columbus. Their 62 acres include a 210-acre sand-bottom lake that is naturally stocked with a variety of fish from the Platte River as well as plenty of full hook-up sites. Free Camping
If you’re driving a DIY recreational vehicle or are in a bind for a place to spend the night—you may want to consider “boondocking” or staying on free public or private land rather than at an RV park. Usually, these spots are quieter and offer more interesting views of the world around us than a traditional RV park!
Eastern Nebraska isn’t home to a lot of BLM or public land, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t free places to park! Consider finding a space at a local Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, Walmart or truck stop. You can also use the Boondocker’s Welcome website, that allows locals across the state to give away some of their driveway space to full-time campers in need for a night or two.

While Eastern Nebraska might not be full of incredible rock formations like Chimney Rock or quirky art installations like Carhenge—there are still plenty of beautiful recreation areas, interesting museums and world-class attractions to explore! Did you know that Arbor Day was founded in Nebraska? In 1872, Nebraska City locals J. Sterling and Caroline Morton challenged people everywhere to plant as many trees as they could on April 10th. On that first Arbor Day, as it came to be known, it’s estimated that over a million trees were planted in the Nebraska territory. Today, you can tour the Mortons’ home and the stunning grounds that are, of course, full of trees, shrubs, walking trails and beautiful gardens.
In addition to being home to our nation’s only one-house nonpartisan legislature, the Nebraska State Capitol is also recognized for its unique architecture. Instead of the grand dome you’ll often find in capitol buildings, ours features a 400-foot tower with an observation deck that offers unbeatable views of the city. Visit the building to take in the history, observe some great artwork and soak in the views! After you’re done touring the inside, take a load off at one of the Capitol Courtyards to enjoy a picnic and the beautiful city.
Situated halfway between Lincoln and Omaha, Platte River State Park is known for its magnificent waterfall, scenic hiking and biking trails, and dual observation towers featuring views of the Platte River Basin. If you’re looking to make an overnight trip of your visit, there are plenty of RV options as well as vintage cabin and teepee rentals.
If someone in your family dreams of space exploration, the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in Ashland is the perfect spot to explore. With exhibits on everything to do with space—including military operations, black holes, astronauts and veterans—there’s a little something inside for everyone.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is not just another zoo. In fact, it was recently ranked as the third-best zoo in the country by USA Today! From 1953-1955, the Boys Town Stamp Collecting Club embarked on an adventure: to create the world’s largest ball of stamps. We are happy to report that they succeeded, creating a 600-pound ball measuring 32 inches in diameter and made up of over 4.6 million stamps. This magnificent sight is located in the Leon Myers Stamp Center in the Boy’s Town Visitors Center—just a short drive from the center of Omaha.
Established in 1820 on the recommendation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Fort Atkinson was the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River. If you’re looking to get a taste of American history, you can visit the reconstructed outpost any time you’d like! Bring the whole family and enjoy one of their living history demonstrations, which take place throughout the summer and fall.
Situated at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers on Nebraska’s northeastern border, Niobrara State Park offers visitors a wide array of outdoor experiences, from camping and picnicking to swimming, boating, fishing and hiking. Some of the most popular attractions include the summer Buffalo Cookouts, wildlife watching, wrangler-led horseback riding, and the J. Alan Cramer Interpretive Center, which not only highlights the history of the area, but also offers an exceptional view of the entire park.
Calumet Bluff is a picturesque cliff about 180 feet high overlooking Lewis and Clark Lake and the Missouri River in Cedar County, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition held its first council with the Sioux Indians for two days in 1804. Today, the Bluff forms the right or south abutment of the Gavins Point Dam and is an exquisite site to behold!
